Author's Statement

Normally, I tend to default to writing Saeran from the secret ends, but given the topic, I felt that Saeran from his own route's good end was more appropriate. This was a bit of a hard piece to write, but even so, I hope you enjoy!

When his girlfriend brings home daffodils in a glass vase, Saeran can’t help but be a little surprised. She did say that she was going to buy a plant to help brighten up the apartment that they share, but he can’t deny that he was expecting something different.

“Why daffodils?” Saeran asks, as she sets the vase on a table near the window.

“I… actually wanted tulips,” she admits a bit bashfully. “But the lady at the flower shop said that they wouldn’t be getting any more in until next year and this was the last one…”

“...you didn’t want a different plant?”

“I did think about it,” she answers thoughtfully. “But I thought it’d be nice to raise some flowers with you! Plus the lady said that these don’t need to be planted in soil, so I thought it’d be easier since I’m new to this...”

“Hmm…”

“...should I have chosen something else?” she asks, tilting her head to the side with a concerned look in her eyes. She must have noticed his apprehension, though it’s not like Saeran was trying to hide it either.

“No, these are fine,” he answers slowly. He doesn’t want to worry her, but the fact that her expression doesn’t change makes it obvious that it’s too late for that.

“Really?”

“Ah…” Saeran squirms a little beneath her scrutiny. He bites his lip and looks away from her, though he knows that he’ll probably give in and tell her soon enough if she doesn’t relent.

“Saeran....” The concern is evident in her voice. “...I’m not going to force you, but you know you can tell me anything, right?”

Saeran takes a deep breath. He knows that, and as much as he’d rather not dredge up old memories, he’d rather do that than keep something from her. “My sa- I mean, Rika really liked daffodils.”

“Oh… Should I take them back then?” she asks in worried tone. “The lady at the flower shop was really nice, so I’m sure she won’t mind...”

Saeran shakes his head. He doesn’t want to cause more trouble for her. “No, it’s okay.”

“Really?” His girlfriend’s lips are still twisted in a small frown. “I don’t want you to be uncomfortable or anything.”

“It’s fine,” Saeran insists. “It’s not like I’ll think of her everytime I look at them, I just remembered that she liked them is all.”

“Are you sure?”

“Yes. I shouldn’t let the fact that she liked them stop me from growing these with you.”

His girlfriend nods her head sagely, but says, “...I don’t want you to force yourself, though.”

Saeran smiles. Her concern for him is truly heartwarming. “I won’t. Anytime I think of her, I’ll just think of you instead.”

She stares at him for a moment before she starts to giggle. “You’re… really corny sometimes, you know that?”

Saeran turns a little pink. “I’m… just being honest.”

His girlfriend stops giggling and shoots him a smile. “I know, and that’s what I love about you.”

He can’t help but turn a bit more red at her blunt and sudden confession, “I… I love you too.”

Her grin widens and she takes a step toward him, poking his side. “...you’re sure about the flower?”

Saeran laughs and wraps his arms around his beloved girlfriend, enveloping her in a hug, “Yes, I’ve never grown a flower in water before so I think it’ll be fun, especially if it’s with you.”
